Just after Evensong, a burning bush appeared…

It’s not every day that you see a burning bush on your way home from church, but that is exactly what happened to Andrew and me this evening. Not for us any voice to take our shoes off as we were standing on holy ground, nor did this appear to be the Holy Spirit at work on the Feast of Pentecost – no this burning bush had a much simpler explanation.

You see, Belfast has been suffering enjoying somewhat of a heat wave in recent days. This means that many people have been enjoying barbecues. Now, what do you do with the remains of the hot ashes when you have finished? I’d suggest that you leave them to cool down and then put in your dustbin.

Sadly this appears not to have been done by some residents near the Albert Bridge. For we came across the burning bush and on inspection found that there was rather a lot of hot charcoal ash around the bottom. Not being able to extinguish or dampen the flames without actual water (or having any receptacle to get water from the Lagan which was right beside us), we did what any responsible adult would do, called the Fire & Rescue Service.

We waited until the firemen arrived and directed them to the fire. One of them said to us,

Thanks for calling us, it’s better that we’re dampening down this than have it burn all the greenery around and have the smoke disrupt the traffic. It’s also better than being called to half a mountain on fire.

Our good turn being done, we carried on home. It seems that many people need to be reminded about the problems of dumping hot ash in places where there is combustible material. Fires can cause real damage to property, and had this ash been put on greenery nearer the houses of the Short Strand, we could have been in quite another situation this evening.

Belfast to Comber bus service – why did the bus not stop?

Ulsterbus turning from Belfast Road into Mill ...

Sadly I didn’t get to see a bus like this tonight. Ulsterbus turning from Belfast Road into Mill Street, Comber, County Down, Northern Ireland, June 2010 (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Below is the text of a letter to Translink, regarding the non-stopping of a bus which the bus stop nearest my home had a timetable for…

I was looking to travel from the Albertbridge Road in Belfast to Comber this evening for a meeting. Living here, I know that the Ulsterbus Service No. 11 goes past the house. On my way home this evening I checked the timetable at the Glenmore Street Metro Stop and saw that there was a Number 11 due about 1815. I came home, got ready for the meeting, and returned to the bus stop. Sadly the Number 11 bus, gaily sailed past with the driver appearing to indicate that he was not meant to stop there.

I would appreciate it if you could investigate what is going on, and get back to me. The signage at the bus stop suggests that the bus should stop there, so why did it not?

I will let you all know what the response is….

Help us all by telling PSNI about those who plant hoax devices

Police Service of Northern Ireland

Thankfully the evacuation of Omagh Police Station last night was due to a hoax device. Sadly, even hoax devices can be used to create terror in the lives of our police and of our communities across Northern Ireland. I call on anyone with any information about those who plant hoax devices and real devices to contact the PSNI about this. It is essential that those responsible are brought before the courts for justice.

The PSNI can be contacted on 0845 600 8000 for non-emergency reporting. In an emergency do phone 999.

It really would try the patience of a saint…

60-pounds

It’s has happened again. What? I hear you ask. Nothing simpler than another occasion in which those in Lib Dem HQ in London forget about us in Northern Ireland.

It is often said to me that the Lib Dems don’t make policy on issues affecting Northern Ireland only – that is on issues devolved to the Northern Ireland Assembly. Last time I looked, taxation was not one of them. It may be in the future, but at present it is not.

So why, does Tim Gordon’s great new website asking us what we would do with £60 extra in every month, not allow people from Northern Ireland to answer? (more…)
