Preparing for Advent 2011 – part one

Most English-speaking Catholics are looking forward to when they will be able to use the new translation of the Roman Missal for the first time. Some of us are very lucky that the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham is already using that text. I was fortunate to be able to attend the Ordinariate’s Mass in Holy Rood Church, South Oxford, in the diocese of Portsmouth when I was in Oxford recently. Mgr Andrew Burnham was the celebrant and had acquired a number of the new mass booklets in Latin and in English as published by the Catholic Truth Society. Being the bibliophile and liturgy fanatic that I am, I did of course buy a copy. A bargain at only £5.

There are lots of videos flying about the Internet showing why the new translation is so important. The one below is quite good – even if it is from the United States.

Faith and Pride: on being offensive

A few people have suggested to me that I gave my Faith and Pride talk, Jonathan Loved David, to be offensive. Nothing could be further from the truth. I gave that talk because it was what I sincerely believe, and I thought other people would be interested in what I had to say. Faith and Pride isn’t about being argumentative or offensive, it is about putting forward an alternative point of view. It is about saying that you can be gay and Christian.

Faith, Hope and Charity

Martyrs Faith, Hope, Charity and their mother ...

SS Faith, Hope and Charity, pray for us. Image via Wikipedia

At Antioch, the passion of the seven holy brothers Machabees, with their mother, who suffered under King Antiochus Epiphanes. Their relics were translated to Rome and buried in the church of St Peter ad Vincula.

At Vercelli, the birthday of St Eusebius, Bishop and Martyr, who for his confession of the Catholic faith was sent into exile by the Emperor Constantine to Scythopolis in Palestine, and thence to Cappadocia. He afterwards returned to his Church and suffered martyrdom at the hands of the persecuting Arians: but his memory is more especially honoured on December 15, on which day he was ordained bishop, and his feast day is kept on December 16.

At Nocera dei Pagani in Campania, the birthday of St Alphonsus Maria Liguori, Founder of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, Bishop of Santa Agata die Goti and Confessor. He was noted for his zeal for souls, his writings, his preaching and his example. Pope Gregory ⅩⅥ added him to the list of the Saints. Pius Ⅸ declared him to be a Doctor of the Universal Church, and Pius Ⅻ declared him heavenly patron before God of all confessors and moral theologians. His festival, however, is observed on the day following.

At Rome, on the Via Latina, the holy martyrs Bonus (a Priest), Faustus and Maur, with nine others, who are written of in the Acts of Pope St Stephen.

Likewise at Rome, the passion of the holy virgins Faith, Hope and Charity, the children of St Sophia; they obtained the crown of martyrdom under the Emperor Hadrian.

At Philadelphia in Arabia, the holy martyrs Cyril, Aquila, Peter, Domitian, Rufus and Menander, crowned on one day.

At Perge in Pamphlia, the holy martyrs Leontius, Attius, Alexander and six other husbandmen, who were beheaded under the governor Flavian in Diocletian’s persecution.

At Gerona in Spain, the birthday of St Felix, Martyr, who, after various kinds of tortures, was ordered by Dacian to be lacerated until he rendered up his unconquered spirit to Christ.

In the neighborhood of Paris, St Justin, Martyr.

At Vienne, France, St Verus, Bishop.

In the district of Lieuven, St Nemesius, Confessor.

At Winchester in England, St Ethelwold.

At Rome, on the Esquiline, the Dedication of the church of St Peter ad Vincula.

And elsewhere many other holy martyrs, confessors and holy virgins.

℟ Thanks be to God.

Corpus Christi – why be afraid of demonstrating your Faith?

Order of Friars Minor Capuchin

It is Corpus Christi today, The Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. The Capuchin Franciscans in Preston carried out a Catholic Eucharistic Flash Mob on Ascension Day.

This is taking the Faith to the streets.

Another of my favourite videos on YouTube is “God in the streets of New York”,

Why, oh why will the Church in Down & Connor not do something similar? Are we all too frightened?

catching up with Oxford – Fr Anton to represent Vatican City?

The Oxford Oratorians play with snow - is this practice for the Pentathlon?
2012 Summer Olympics

I’ve been catching up on news from friends in Oxford. I love this post from the Oxford Oratory.

It was announced in Rome this morning that our own Fr Anton Webb has been selected to represent the Vatican City at the London 2012 Olympics at the Pentathlon.

At a press conference in the Vatican, Archbishop Capriccio Pesce d’Aprile, Prefect of the Congregation for Sport and Physical Fitness, said, “It is true that with a population of about 800, many of whom are elderly prelates, the Vatican City is never going to win as many medals as the USA or China. But we consider it very important to show the Church’s engagement with the modern world, so for the first time the Vatican has entered every Olympic event. We have had to co-opt some clergy and religious from around the world to do this, and they will be brought to Rome to train in the Vatican gardens. The self-discipline and asceticism of the religious life will certainly give them the edge over other competitors.”

THe Archbishop was hopeful that the Marche Pontificale might be heard for the first time at an Olympic medal ceremony for some events: “The Swiss Guards have put together a formidable archery team, and of course the Church’s expertise in the field of liturgical ceremonies will mean that our synchronised swimming team will have a grace and precision that are second to none.”

The full list of Vatican competitors will be published on the Holy See‘s website at midday today.

I am sure that Fr Anton’s many friends will be looking forward to cheering him on. Initial reports are that he has been training by running up and down St Giles’.
