twelfth century precursor of television

Saint Clare was born Chiara Offreduccio in Assisi in 1194. She followed her fellow citizen, Saint Francis, in a life of poverty and became mother and foundress of an order of nuns, the “Poor Clares” in Assisi. The Poor Clares were devoted to Our Lord and led a very active and fulfilling life, even though their convent was kept silent most of the time for prayer. Saint Agnes, Clare’s biological sister, joined the order along with her sister shortly after it was founded.

One of the most significant miracles attributed to Clare happened when an army of soldiers raided Assisi and planned to attack the convent first. Clare carried the Blessed Sacrament out to the wall of Assisi, although very sick, to where the enemy could see It and prayed that the Poor Clares be spared from the attack. A voice answered her, “I will keep them always in My care.” At this moment, the soldiers were struck with fear and immediately fled from Assisi.

Saint Clare is the patron Saint of television because during her life when she was too ill to attend Mass, she was apparently able to see and hear Mass on the wall of her room.

She died on August 11 in 1253.

Deus, qui beátam Claram ad Paupertátis amórem misericórditer adduxisti, eius nobis intercessióne concéde, ut, in paupertäte spíritus Christum sequéntes, at tui contemplatiónem in cælésti regna perveníre mereámur. Per Dóminum.

God of mercy,
you inspired Saint Clare with the love of poverty.
By the help of her prayers
may we follow Christ in poverty of spirit
and come to the joyful vision of your glory
in the kingdom of heaven.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
– Amen.

Sister Etheldreda SSL – a memory

SrEthel

Sister Etheldreda SSL with a past pupil from Ghana

It is a year since last I sent a card to Sister Etheldreda SSL for her feast day which is today. This year it will not be happening at all. Today, however, I will be remembering my friend Sister Etheldreda, as I say the Office, and pray that her soul is resting in peace, and that she will be with God.

Sister Etheldreda, became part of my life as we saw her walking up and down the Cullybackey Road near my childhood home. Little did I realise then how much she would influence me in my adult life.

Known locally as ‘the walking nun’ Sister Etheldreda was until very close to her death last year always walking about somewhere. She was always very active and encouraged me to be so too.

When I finally phoned her the day after I became a Catholic, her response to me was:

Alleluia. Welcome home.

followed by

It worked, the years of prayer worked.

Now, let me repay her prayer for me by praying for the happy repose of her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed.

Réquiem ætérnam dona eis Dómine; et lux perpétua lúceat eis. Requiéscant in pace. Amen.

An indulgence of 300 days, applicable only to the holy souls (S. C. Ind., Feb. 13, 1908, S. P. Ap., May 17, 1927)

Four prayers to St Philip: prayer 2 – Bl. John Henry Newman

Holy Spirit

Image by Barking Tigs via Flickr

O my dear and holy Patron, Philip, I put myself into thy hands, and for the love of Jesus, for that love’s sake, which chose thee and made thee a saint, I implore thee to pray for me, that, as He has brought thee to heaven, so in due time He may take me to heaven also.

And I ask of thee especially to gain for me to a true devotion such as thou hadst to the Holy Ghost, the Third Person in the Ever-blessed Trinity; that, as He at Pentecost so miraculously filled thy heart with his grace, I too may in my measure have the gifts necessary for my salvation.

Therefore I ask thee  to gain for me those His seven great gifts, to dispose and excite my heart towards faith and virture.

Beg for me the gift of Wisdom, that I may prefer heaven to earth, and know truth from falsehood:

The gift of Understanding, by which I may have imprinted upon my mind the mysteries of His Word:

The gift of Counsel, that I may see my way in all my perplexities:

The gift of Fortitude, that with bravery and stubbornness I may battle with my foe:

The gift of Knowledge, to enable me to direct all my doings with a pure intention to the glory of God:

The gift of Religion, to make me devout and conscientious:

And the gift of Holy Fear, to make me feel awe, reverence and sobriety amid all my spiritual blessings.

Sweetest Father, Flower of Purity, Martyr of Charity, pray for us.

Four prayers to St Philip: Prayer 1 – Bl. John Henry Newman

℣ Ora pro nobis, Sancte Philippe, ℟ Ut digni efficiamur promissionibus Christi.

O my dear and holy Patron, Philip, I put myself into thy hands, and for the love of Jesus, for that love’s sake which chose thee and made thee a saint, I implore thee to pray for me, that, as He has brought thee to heaven, so in due time He may take me to heaven too.

Thou hast experience of the trials and troubles of this life; thou knowest well what it is to bear the assaults of the devil, the mockery of this world, and the temptations of flesh and blood. Thou knowest how weak is human nature, and how treacherous the human heart, and thou art so full of sympathy and compassion, that, amidst all thy present ineffable glory and blessedness, thou canst, I know, give a thought to me.

Think of me then, my dear St Philip, be sure to think of me, even though I am at times so unmindful of thee. Gain for me all things necessary for my perseverance in the grace of God, and my eternal salvation. Gain for me, by thy powerful intercession, the strength to fight a good fight, to witness boldly for God and religion in the midst of sinners, to be brave when Satan would frighten or force me to what is wrong, to overcome myself, to do my whole duty, and thus to be acquitted in the judgment.

Vessel of the Holy Ghost, Apostle of Rome, Saint of primitive times, pray for me.

Novena to the Holy Face – Day 3

Sister Maria Pierina De Micheli

Image via Wikipedia

The Holy Face of Jesus

I firmly wish that my face reflecting the intimate pains of my soul, the suffering and love of my heart, be more
honoured! Whoever gazes upon me already consoles me.

(Our Lord Jesus Christ to Sister Pierina)

Daily Preparatory Prayer

O Most Holy and Blessed Trinity, through the intercession of Holy Mary, whose soul was pierced through by a sword
of sorrow at the sight of the passion of her Divine Son, we ask your help in making a perfect Novena of reparation with Jesus, united with all His sorrows, love and total abandonment. We now implore all the Angels and Saints to intercede for us as we pray this Holy Novena to the Most Holy Face of Jesus and for the glory of the most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen. (Start novena)

Novena in honour of
The Most Holy Face of Jesus

All those who, attracted by my love, and venerating my countenance, shall receive, by virtue of my humanity, abrilliant and vivid impression of my divinity. This splendour shall enlighten the depths of their souls, so that in eternal glory the celestial court shall marvel at the marked likeness of their features with my divine countenance.
(Our Lord Jesus Christ to St. Gertrude)

THIRD DAY

(Console Holy Face and recite Daily Preparatory Prayer)

Psalm 51,6b-7.
You are just when you pass sentence on me, blameless when you give judgment. You know I was born guilty, a sinner from the moment of conception.

Prayer of Pope Pius IX

O Jesus! Cast upon us a look of mercy: turn your Face towards each of us as you did to Veronica; not that we may see it with our bodily eyes, for this we do not deserve, but turn it towards our hearts, so that, remembering you, we may ever draw from this fountain of strength the vigour necessary to sustain the combats of life. Amen.
Mary, our Mother, and Saint Joseph, pray for us.
Through the merits of your precious blood and your Holy Face, O Jesus, grant us our petition……………… Pardon and mercy.

Prayer of Saint Francis

All highest, glorious God, cast your light into the darkness of our hearts, give us true faith, firm hope, perfect charity
and profound humility, so that with wisdom, courage and perception, O Lord, we may do what is truly your holy will.
Amen.

To the Angels and Saints

We salute you, through the Holy Face and Sacred Heart of Jesus, O all you Holy Angels and Saints of God. We rejoice in your glory, and we give thanks to our Lord for all the benefits which He has showered upon you; we praise Him, and glorify Him, and for an increase of your joy and honour, we offer Him the most Holy Face and gentle Heart of Jesus. Pray that we may become formed according to the heart of God. Amen.

Pater Noster, once.
Ave Maria, thrice
Gloria Patri, once.
O Bleeding Face, O Face Divine, be every adoration Thine. Thrice
