Opinion on LibDemVoice: the forgotten family member and what Nick said

Today, an article I wrote was published on LibDemVoice. In it I stated

I hope that Nick meant what he said and indeed that he said what he meant.

Read why I said so on LibDemVoice

the battle for democracy at Lib Dem Conference

papers_please

It is very nearly time for Liberal Democrat Autumn Conference, but many of us who would normally know by now that they are attending do not. Some know that the Party that they have served for years does not now want them to attend on the advice of the Greater Manchester Police. One of those is Gareth Epps, a longtime attendee, and I thought well respected party member, has said on his blog:

The concept of ‘processing’ party members is anathema to many: we are Liberals and against this sort of thing.  However, the incompetence of the police system (fuelling suspicions that it is a job-creation exercise for Greater Manchester Police, without any genuine basis in providing security) is endangering the basis of having a democratic political conference itself.

As readers will know, I find myself unable to answer the stupid questions in the registration form for police accreditation. I am intending to travel to Birmingham to make my voice heard. We need to stand up to those who are attempting to bully our party into submission.

Those of us who have been elected as representatives of our local parties at our local AGMs have the right to represent our local parties at Federal Conference each year. What right has the constabulary to tell us we cannot attend. This issue has now hit the national press (see The Independent). This is a mighty big row, and it is not going to be allowed to settle down.

I’m sure that, like Gareth, I shall be posting on this issue a lot more in the forthcoming days and weeks.

did Sir Humphrey give the advice on Chapter 3 of Part 5 of the Protection of Freedoms Bill?

For many gay men in the United Kingdom, there was light at the end of a tunnel in the Government’s Protection of Freedoms Bill.

The Rt Hon David Cameron, wrote in an exclusive for Pink News:

We will change the law so that any past convictions for consensual homosexual sexual activities, which have since become lawful, will be treated as spent, and will not be disclosed on a criminal record check when applying for a job. This is a question of justice – and it’s right that we should change the law and wipe the slate clean.

Unfortunately, it seems that once again HMG is being economical with the truth. (more…)

Motions inextricably linked

The debate on this motion in the House of Commons yesterday:

That the draft Higher Education (Basic Amount) (England) Regulations 2010, which were laid before this House on 29 November, be approved.

was inextricably linked to that on

That, for the purpose of section 24 of the Higher Education Act 2004, the higher amount should be increased to £9,000, and to £4,500 in the cases described in regulation 5 of the draft regulations in Command Paper Cm 7986, and that the increase should take effect from 1 September 2012.

However, whilst I do not agree with the trebling of fees for full-time undergraduates, as has been made clear in recent posts. As one who has been a part-time undergraduate the provisions on the inclusion of part-time students within the student loan system for the first time is one part of the Bill with which I can agree.
